Events
Do I have to get a ticket for every event or can I just turn up?
Yes, please get a ticket on the website before coming to an event, whether you are a member or not! If you arrive without a ticket, we will ask you to get the ticket on your phone at the entrance, so you can save time by getting it in advance.
Getting a ticket in advance is important for the following reasons:
– To agree with our terms and conditions
– To help us prepare for the event
– So we can contact participants in case of cancellation or incidents
– So we can keep track of the popularity of events and work on improving them
Tickets for our regular events can be purchased on the quick sign up page.
Do I need to be a member to join events?
No, most of our events are open to everyone. You will need to pay 6-15 euros for the ticket, depending on the event. Some of our events are for members only, so you will have to join before you can go to those events.
Membership allows you free access to our events and also comes with many other perks :)

I’m a native speaker of Dutch!
All of our events are also fun for native speakers! Just pick something you enjoy.
If you specifically want to help people with the language, come to the beginners club or contact Eloise about joining a Studieclub, and get a free coffee in exchange for helping.
Apart from the events mentioned here, there are many other activities organised by members for members, such as bouldering, hiking, museum visits, and more. We believe the best way to learn a language is through doing something you enjoy, so the most important thing is that you join activities you find fun!
Do you do online events?
Most of our events are at our cosy café location: Herengracht 13A, The Hague.
Other events are in and around The Hague. If a member is interested in starting an online event they are of course welcome, but for now we don’t have any.
Membership
Do I need to speak Dutch to join?
No! We welcome all levels, from complete beginners to fluent speakers. We have some courses and events aimed at total beginners, and we have a Language Exchange every Thursday where other languages are spoken, if learning Dutch is not your main goal.
How do I become a member?
All the information about membership can be found here! Just choose your membership and fill in the form. You will be asked to pay for the first month with PayPal, IDeal or by card, and from then on the payment will be taken from your account every month.
After you fill in your details and make the payment, you will get an email explaining how to join the whatsapp groups and the free member tickets will become available to you when you log in on the website.
What is the cancellation policy?
Your membership renews automatically each month (or each year with the yearly plan). You can cancel your membership online at any time, and no further membership fees will be charged from the date of cancellation. Please note that any fees already paid cannot be refunded.
If you need to take a break, you can also temporarily pause your membership — for instance, if you’re going abroad for a few months.
What is the profile of the members?
Generally, anyone is welcome to our community. Most are between 25 and 45 years old, but we also have older and younger members! Our members come from all over the world: from Europe, but also outside! Most are ‘voluntary migrants’, such as expats, international students, people with a Dutch partner, and so on. A smaller portion has a refugee background. About 1 in 4 members is Dutch native speaker. We welcome anyone that is open-minded, respectful towards others, and enthusiastic about getting involved in the community!
Can a community membership replace Dutch courses?
Community membership is a useful tool in your Dutch learning journey, but not a complete solution to learning Dutch. It is useful for people who already have a basic Dutch level who want to have more practice and exposure in more realistic situations, and it is useful for people who want to build more connections.
It’s good to keep in mind that the community events are a lot less structured than courses. It’s more about having fun and practicing in a low-key way. For a more structured way of learning, we recommend to look at our courses.
Do you provide a discount for students and people with low income?
Yes, we do! You can get a 25% reduction on your membership fees.
You will need to email us a photo of your student card/ooievaarspas in the café to get your personal discount code. If your situation changes, please let us know. Read all of the terms here.

Café
I want to speak Dutch! If I come and sit in the café, will someone chat with me?
We’d love that! You’re always welcome to drop by for a drink or a pastry and place a little flag on your table. That way, you show that you’d like to have a chat with someone. You can also ask others with a flag if they’d like to talk with you. We have flags not just for Dutch but many other languages, take as many as you like!
We can’t guarantee that someone will join you right away, so it might be nice to grab a book or magazine from our bookshelf while you wait.
Want to be more certain that there will be someone to chat with? Then come to an event or one of our kletsmomenten (chat sessions):
– Woensdag van 13:00 tot 14:00
– Donderdag van 17:00 tot 18:00
– Vrijdag van 16:00 tot 17:00
– Zaterdag van 15:00 tot 16:30
We also have the Beginners Club every Sunday morning at 11:00. Here, members with a beginner level of Dutch meet with native speakers to chat and play games. As a native speaker, you’ll get a free cup of coffee or tea as a thank-you for your time!
We recommend signing up via the website. If someone is already on the list, others often feel more confident about signing up too. 🙂
Do you serve drinks and food?
Yes, we have a bar with hot drinks, soft drinks, alcoholic drinks and snacks. We are planning to expand our food menu soon. View our menu here.
Is there WiFi in the cafe?
Yes, just ask at the bar for the password!
Do you accept cash or cards?
We prefer card payments, but cash is also accepted.
