Join us for The Story of the NL – an educational show with jokes where comedian and tour guide Luuk van der Vaart uses history to explain the high-functioning swamp we call the Netherlands. This is a funny history lesson that helps you truly understand Dutch culture.
About the show
Uncover the real origins of Dutch society in this 70-minute funny educational experience. Why are the Dutch so direct? Where does the tolerance come from? How did a tiny swamp become a global trading empire?
Luuk uses history to explain the society we live in today – from the Golden Age to the welfare state, from water management to social norms. The jokes are there to keep it entertaining, but information comes first. Think of it as a funny university lecture, not a comedy show.
Previous audiences at Google Amsterdam, ING, UvA, TU/e and many more have walked away with a deeper understanding of the Netherlands – and a few good laughs along the way.
About your host
Luuk van der Vaart is a comedian, city tour guide, and former teacher who mixes comedy with history. He’s won two student comedy festivals and now dedicates his work to helping people feel a sense of belonging through understanding culture. His style is fast, honest, and funny – with a mission for more positive globalization.

Luuk van der Vaart is een comedian, stadsgids en voormalig docent die comedy met geschiedenis mixt. Hij won twee studentencabaretfestivals en wijdt zijn werk nu aan mensen helpen een gevoel van verbondenheid te vinden door cultuur te begrijpen. Zijn stijl is snel, eerlijk en grappig – met een missie voor meer positieve globalisering.
