Boekenclub 📚 Vele Hemels boven de zevende
We gaan praten over ‘Vele Hemels boven de zevende’ van Griet Op de Beeck – een meeslepende roman over vijf mensen die worstelen met geluk, liefde, verdriet en de vraag hoe je verder moet in dit mooie maar lastige bestaan.
Over onze boekenclub
We komen ongeveer één keer per 2 maanden samen om een boek te bespreken. We kiezen boeken die oorspronkelijk in het Nederlands zijn geschreven – vaak kortere of toegankelijkere titels. Via lezen ontdekken we samen de Nederlandse (en wereld)cultuur, en hebben we kwetsbare, diepe discussies over thema’s die ertoe doen.
Niveau: B1 tot native speakers welkom – iedereen die comfortabel genoeg is om in het Nederlands te discussiëren.
Wat gaan we doen?
We gaan onze meningen delen over het boek en vragen over de thema’s beantwoorden. Daarna kiezen we het volgende boek, de datum en de host.

Wat meenemen?
Als je wilt, kun je jouw exemplaar van het boek en eventuele aantekeningen meenemen, maar het is niet verplicht. Ideeën voor het volgende boek zijn altijd welkom.
Het boek: Vele Hemels boven de zevende
We lezen dit keer Vele Hemels boven de zevende van Griet Op de Beeck. Het heeft 272 pagina’s.
Waar gaat het over? Lou is twaalf, Eva zesendertig, Elsie tweeënveertig, Casper zesenveertig, en Jos eenenzeventig. Vijf mensen, met elkaar verbonden, vertellen hun verhaal. Over onverwacht geluk dat de wereld mooier maakt dan je ooit had durven dromen en over verdriet dat je omverwerpt, je compleet murw slaat.
Dit is een ontroerende, kwetsbare roman over familie, liefde en de vraag hoe je verder moet als het leven zwaar is. Een verhaal dat je raakt tot in je ziel, over mensen die vechten met zichzelf in dit bestaan dat belachelijk mooi en geweldig lastig is.
Leuk als je het hele boek hebt gelezen, maar dat is niet verplicht! Als je je wilt voorbereiden, kun je over deze vragen nadenken:
- Wat vond je van het boek?
- Zou je het boek aanraden?
- Heb je nog vragen over het boek (moeilijke zinnen, onduidelijke woorden enzovoort)?
- Welke emoties heb je ervaren tijdens het lezen?
- Welk personage vond je het meest herkenbaar of interessant? Waarom?
- Hoe zijn de vijf personages met elkaar verbonden? Wat betekenen ze voor elkaar?
- Wat vind je van de verschillende perspectieven in het boek?
- Welke thema’s vind je het sterkst in dit boek (geluk, verdriet, familie, identiteit, acceptatie)?
- Welke zin of passage vond je het sterkst?
- Hoe zou jij de titel interpreteren: “vele hemels boven de zevende”?

Nederlands niveau
We voeren het gesprek in het Nederlands – maak je geen zorgen als jouw Nederlands nog niet perfect is; we spreken langzaam en helpen elkaar! Dit boek is geschikt voor intermediate leerders. Het is oké als je niet alles begrijpt. Een e-reader kan handig zijn, dan kun je woorden snel opzoeken. Je zult versteld staan hoeveel je begrijpt en leert! 📖
We will discuss ‘Vele Hemels boven de zevende’ (Many Heavens Beyond the Seventh) by Griet Op de Beeck – a gripping novel about five people struggling with happiness, love, grief, and the question of how to move forward in this beautiful but difficult existence.
About our book club
We meet approximately once every 2 months to discuss a book. We choose books originally written in Dutch – often shorter or more accessible titles. Through reading, we discover Dutch (and world) culture together, and have vulnerable, deep discussions about themes that matter.
Level: B1 to native speakers welcome – anyone comfortable enough to discuss in Dutch.
What will we do?
We will share our opinions on the book and answer questions about its themes. Afterwards, we’ll choose the next book, the date, and the host.

What to bring?
If you’d like, you can bring your copy of the book and any notes you have, but it’s not required. Ideas for the next book are always welcome.
The Book: Vele Hemels boven de zevende
We’re reading Vele Hemels boven de zevende by Griet Op de Beeck this time. It’s 272 pages long.
What’s it about? Lou is twelve, Eva thirty-six, Elsie forty-two, Casper forty-six, and Jos seventy-one. Five people, connected to each other, tell their stories. About unexpected happiness that makes the world more beautiful than you ever dared to dream, and about grief that knocks you over and completely wears you down.
This is a moving, vulnerable novel about family, love, and the question of how to move forward when life is heavy. A story that touches you to your soul, about people fighting with themselves in this existence that is ridiculously beautiful and terribly difficult.
It’s great if you’ve read the entire book, but it’s not mandatory! If you want to prepare, consider these questions:
- What did you think of the book?
- Would you recommend it?
- Do you have any questions about the book (difficult sentences, unclear words, etc.)?
- What emotions did you experience while reading?
- Which character did you find most relatable or interesting? Why?
- How are the five characters connected to each other? What do they mean to each other?
- What do you think of the different perspectives in the book?
- Which themes do you find strongest in this book (happiness, grief, family, identity, acceptance)?
- Which sentence or passage struck you the most?

We conduct the conversation in Dutch – don’t worry if your Dutch isn’t perfect yet; we speak slowly and help each other! This book is suitable for intermediate learners. It’s okay if you don’t understand everything. An e-reader can be helpful as you can look up words quickly. You’ll be amazed at how much you understand and learn! 📖
